The creation of living environments is one of the most challenging and varied areas of our work and following the Government’s announcement that they want 1 million new homes to be built by 2020, residential planning is likely to be an area requiring specialist consultancy. The company has been fortunate to be involved in the design and planning processes of a variety of residential schemes ranging from large scale sustainable urban extensions, often involving many thousands of new homes, to schemes involving just a few dwellings.
At a more strategic level, we have considerable experience in promoting sites through development plans and neighbourhood plans. We are able to assess the development potential of land and develop effective planning strategies to maximise land value and promote sites. To assist in securing development, KLW are experienced in preparing design briefs and sustainability matrices to support potential allocations and planning applications. Our approach is carefully measured and tailored to secure positive results. Community engagement also forms an important part of the process and for larger residential schemes we regularly hold Public Consultation meetings to hear the views of local residents and those people affected by any development scheme put forward.
As part of the planning application process we have prepared numerous residential based Environmental Impact Assessments and are experienced in consultant team working. We would be happy to discuss your requirements whether you are a large house builder, land promoter or a small to medium sized business.

Our portfolio of commercial clients is significant. It has included a 112 acre Research and Development Park in Cambridgeshire, the development of an industrial area in Gravesend and numerous smaller scale commercial developments relating to redundant rural buildings. We regularly advise clients on the allocation and development of sites within urban and rural areas and have particular expertise in the development of rural employment sites. Recent schemes have included restaurant proposals, changes of use and clinics within central commercial areas.
Within the South East the demand for leisure and tourist development is increasing and with that comes an increase in pressure on the environment. Our company is able to review development projects, recommend a planning strategy to deliver the desired outcomes and advise on bringing together a consultant team, should that be necessary. All our consultants are skilled in project coordination, whether for public inquiries, neighbourhood planning or any other planning proposals.
We regularly prepare Environmental Impact Assessments and this requires detailed project coordination between consultants.
A feature of modern planning is the need to engage effectively with local communities. Traditionally this has been in the form of an exhibition, but more recently open forums and workshops are being promoted by local authorities.
Neighbourhood planning is a particular growth area and this involves a significant amount of community engagement. Here at KLW we have acted for Town and Parish Councils in preparing their plans but also private clients who have promoted land through the Neighbourhood Plan process. At all levels the ability to present to large groups is essential and this is something in which we are particularly adept.
